‘Saluting Our Sisters’ - Black History Month 2023

To celebrate Black History Month we are running two competitions. All work should be completed at home and returned to school by Friday 3rd November.

Entries will be judged by a panel of governors and prizes will be awarded to the best EYFS (Nursery and Reception), KS1 (Year 1 and 2), LKS2 (Year 3 and 4), UKS2 (Year 5 and 6) and adult (parents, families and staff) entries.

BPS Poetry competition

To celebrate Black History Month 2023, we want to honour the amazing achievements and contributions of black women in Britain – from literature, music, science, politics, and social care to campaigners, nurses, and everyday heroes who have made a difference to our lives.

You can submit a poem about a black woman who has made an impact in their chosen field, explaining why she is an inspiration to you.

Your poem doesn't have to be about a famous person, it can be about members of your family or women who have inspired you in your community.

Get creative and have fun with it!

Our Bedfont Primary School competition is also linked with the official Black History Month UK who are running a poetry competition that is open to all ages, for more information or to also enter the Black History Month UK competition follow the links:

The judges will be looking for poems that capture the spirit of Black History Month and celebrate the achievements and contributions of black women.

BPS Art Competition

Choose a black person who inspires you. They could be someone you have learnt about from Black History, a famous black person in the present, or even someone you know. Think about their qualities and what they have achieved. Perhaps there are certain words, colours or symbols that come to mind when you imagine them?

Draw an outline of their portrait onto a piece of paper or card with a black pen or pencil. Use coloured pens, pencils, crayons or paint to add colour or patterns to the space surrounding the outline.

Decorate the inside of the portrait with colours, drawings and words, or cut and paste bits from magazines or newspapers. You could include images related to their life or quotes from them.

The judges will be looking for artwork that captures the spirit of Black History Month and celebrates the achievements and contributions of black women.

BPS Entries

When you have completed your entries for either the poetry competition or the art competition, send them to school with your child (or email a picture of your entry to office@bedfont.hounslow.sch.uk) by Friday 3rd November.

Adults are also welcome to submit their own entries and should send these to school with their child, clearly marked as an adult entry.

Don’t forget that you can also enter the official Black History Month UK competition in addition to the BPS competition.
