The Maya developed efficient farming techniques and grew crops like maize, squash, beans and root vegetables.
Corn from maize was soaked to bring out the grain, then rolled into dough to make tortillas, the flat bread that is still widely eaten today.
Why not try making your own tortillas? Follow the instructions below:
Making the dough:
- 125 grams whole wheat flour
- 125 grams plain flour
(if you don't have whole wheat, just use 250g plain flour)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 180ml water
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
Mix together flours and salt.
Add water, and oil.
Mix together first with a spoon, then with your hands.
Once your dough is easy to handle, divide into 8 balls.
Roll out as flat as possible.
Cook each rolled out dough on a hot griddle or frying pan, browning both sides slightly. Get an adult to help with this part!
