Welcome to the year 5 curriculum page!
We will be working hard this year to make sure all of the children have an enjoyable, varied and enriching programme of learning as they move through the year.
This Spring, our English work will be based around some very famous stories – C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe; as well as classic texts ‘Macbeth’ and ‘The Highway Man’. We will be working to get a good understanding of the text, as well as the way in which it has been written, exploring the meanings and characters. We will be working with a Shakespeare workshop with our Macbeth work! We will continue to focus on spelling, punctuation and grammar throughout the term and across the year, built into the English lessons to help; as well as learning the Year 5 & 6 expected spellings through our own self-motivated system. Please ensure that your children work on these at home to give them the best chance to move on in class!
Maths across year 5 will continue to follow the National Curriculum and White Rose, reinforcing the number sense work that we completed in the Autumn term. We will be using these skills to further develop our knowledge of multiplication and division, and in turn using this knowledge to look at fractions. Children will be working across the year group with different teachers to help ensure that their learning needs are met. We will also be expecting the children to be working on their times tables – they will be shown strategies to use to help with a quick recall of these facts, and this will be important as we move through the year.
Look out for homework – weekly maths, along with Times Tables Rockstars, spelling, and reading. There will also be topic projects to keep you busy at home!
We visited Sky in January to take part in a Sky Skills Workshop – we created a video explaining the challenges that social media presents and what we can do to keep safe. We often require additional adults to join us on these trips – keep an eye out for letters with details.
