Special Educational Needs and Disability

At Bedfont Primary School, we believe that every pupil, regardless of gender, race or disability, has a right to a broad and balanced curriculum that is presented in a supportive and stimulating atmosphere which ensures that each child achieves her or his full potential. All children follow the National Curriculum which is the universal approach throughout the school using quality first classroom teaching. Some pupils require targeted short-term support to enable learning in specific identified areas of the curriculum. Other pupils require more long-term specific individualised teaching to support their learning. Whatever a pupil’s need may be, our Special Educational Needs provision will identify and provide the necessary support to enable every child to reach their potential. The personnel involved in developing this provision are the Headteacher, the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO), Class Teachers and Support Staff.

The Children and Families Act 2014 made changes to provision for children with special needs and disabilities, which now starts from birth to 25 years. Pupils who previously had a statement for learning needs or disability will be replaced over the next three years with an Education Health Care (EHC) plan which will involve parents, child, education and health working together to develop a personalised plan for the child.

Every school and Local Authority is required to produce a Local Offer which outlines the types of provision available which will support parents and pupils in understanding the range of support and specialisms available in school and from the Local Authority.

The document below outlines the local offer from Bedfont Primary School, we hope that it provides you with a clear outline of the referral process and support available for pupils. The SENCo (Mrs Swasbrook) will be happy to discuss any individual issues or concerns. This is an evolving process and under regular review. We have also included the DFE Guide for Parents and Carers.
