Bedfont Primary School Governing Body

The Bedfont Primary School Governing Body is committed to supporting the school while upholding the five core functions of school governance:

  1. Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos & strategic direction
  2. Holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff
  3. Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent
  4. Ensuring leadership complies with statutory regulations
  5. Engaging stakeholders

Governors are part of the school leadership team and are held accountable for the performance of the school; we therefore take our responsibilities seriously.

In order to carry out business as efficiently as possible, Bedfont governors now meet as a full Governing Body five times a year and have an annual schedule of committee meetings.  Current committees are as follows:

  • Performance & Standards                                            Chair: Ms M. Rioga
  • Finance & Premises                                                     Chair: Rev P. Smith
  • Pay & Personnel                                                           Chair: Mrs C. Pinto
  • Headteacher’s Performance Review Panel                 Chair: Mrs C. Pinto
  • Governors’ Development Working Party

We also nominate governors to monitor specific aspects of the school and curriculum by taking on ‘named governor’ responsibilities.  Current named governor roles are each shared by two governors and include:

  • Health & Safety
  • Safeguarding & Child Protection
  • Inclusion – covering SEND (Special Educational Needs & Disability), SMSC (Spiritual Moral Social and Cultural), PSHE (Personal Social & Health Education), G&T (Gifted & Talented), and SRE (Sexual & Relationship Education)
  • Pupil Premium
  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Computing

All governors are expected to prepare for meetings, attend and participate; get to know the school and keep up to date with changes; attend training courses for governors; visit and support the school.

The Governing Body is supported by a professional clerking service run by Hounslow borough. The service provides a regular correspondent for minute taking and advice at meetings, ensures statutory deadlines are met, and organises meeting documents.

In order to carry out the core functions mentioned above, governors are expected to:

  • Work closely with the Headteacher and other senior leaders;
  • Ask searching questions to ensure areas for development are addressed promptly;
  • Provide challenge in a supportive constructive way, which respects the Headteacher's position as professional leader of the school, but ensures that key issues are tackled;
  • Be proactive in monitoring the impact of initiatives and policies especially those addressing improvement priorities;
  • Get involved in agreeing aims and development priorities;
  • Appoint senior leaders when vacancies arise and carry out succession planning;
  • Provide the Headteacher with support and advice, drawing on our knowledge and experience.

If you have any questions or would like to know more about the governors at Bedfont Primary School, please contact the Chair of Governors via the school office on 020 8890 4755.
