Welcome to the year 5 curriculum page
We will be working hard this year to make sure all of the children have an enjoyable, varied and enriching programme of learning as they move through the year.
This half term, our English and topic work will be based around the theme of ‘Ancient Greece’. We will be learning about life in the ancient time, as well as using stories from the time, known as Greek Myths, as starting points for our English learning. We will also be focusing on spelling, punctuation and grammar throughout the term and across the year, both within the English lessons and in stand-alone lessons. Spellings will focus on specific patterns and will we ensure that these are taught in class before the words are sent home for children to learn – please ensure that your children work on these at home to give them the best chance to move on in class!
Maths across year 5 will continue to follow the National Curriculum, starting with a strong focus on place value. Children will be working across the year group with different teachers to help ensure that their learning needs are met. We will also be expecting the children to be working on their times tables – they will be shown strategies to use to help with a quick recall of these facts, and this will be important as we move through the year.
We will be going on a variety of trips this year, with a visit to Sky Skills as well as a trip to the Feltham, Bedfont and Hanworth Heritage Society for a local area workshop. We often require additional adults to join us on these trips – keep an eye out for letters with details.
