Welcome to the year 5 curriculum page!
This year we will continue to work hard to make sure all of the children have an enjoyable, varied and enriching programme of learning as they move through the year.
This half term, our English work will focus on working from exciting texts such as The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, as well as Shakespeare’s Macbeth, with a drama group coming in to work with us. Topic work will be based around the theme of ‘What the Romans did for us’, with computing coding focus after half term. In science, we will be classifying materials according to their properties, as well as thinking about how materials change. We will also be focusing on spelling, punctuation and grammar throughout the term and across the year, both within the English lessons and in stand-alone lessons. Spellings will focus on specific patterns and will we ensure that these are taught in class before the words are sent home for children to learn – please ensure that your children work on these at home to give them the best chance to move on in class!
Maths across year 5 will continue to follow the National Curriculum, starting with a strong focus on place value. Children will be working across the year group with different teachers to help ensure that their learning needs are met. We will also be expecting the children to be working on their times tables – they will be shown strategies to use to help with a quick recall of these facts, and this will be important as we move through the year.
This term will see a variety of sports events that children may be involved in, as well as a trip to the Unicorn Theatre in London, who will also be visiting school before hand to carry out a workshop with the children, based on the Ancient Greek story of Icarus.
